Recruitment

We do not currently have any project specific vacancies but are always keen to meet the right sort of person if there is a particularly good ‘fit’ with regard to an experience for the sort of work we undertake and a reasonably close proximity to our offices in SW London.

We would be interested in a senior design engineer and possible Associate Designate.

They must be a Chartered Structural Engineer-

A wide ranging role including help running the business, pitching for new work but mainly as lead designer on a number of projects.

The role would ideally include the inspection of residential property (mainly period houses) to prepare engineers reports on a range of defects mainly subsidence and movement/ cracking related. Most of these houses and flats have failed mortgage surveys and require a specialist second opinion. Most are in South and West London.

Drivers license clearly essential as is meeting people, being a good communicator and well organised.

Excellent interpersonal skills essential.

The role would not suit a senior line manager from a larger firm who has moved away from day to day design of building elements.

See general notes below.

NOTES

The following notes might help, but please do have a good look at the rest of the web site for more general information.

Design projects range from a £50,000 to £5M.

We are a small building structures team of about 6 engineers (not Civils)

EXISTING London building stock and ‘private client’ residential refurb expertise is essential. This requires UK building stock familiarity and practical on site experience in the UK.

Please note the use of UK codes applied to overseas buildings will not be enough on its own.

You need to understand old buildings and what you will find when we take them apart.

Our work is wide ranging and includes some Commercial buildings, but mainly ‘private client’ luxury residential work as illustrated elsewhere on the website. You will need to enjoy ‘design detail’ and helping architects unravel small but important details. You will need to be able to communicate with private lay clients and explain what we do in simple, not technical terms.

You will spend much of your week with clients and fellow designers.

The team structure is quite small so needs a day to day hands on ‘design’ approach, not a pure management role, with 90% of your time spent on fee earning work.

You will deal with client appointments, fee agreements and be responsible for keeping our clients well informed and of course happy!

Previous ‘small practice’ experience would be beneficial.

It is likely that the range of skills and qualifications; designing a wide range of buildings, site experience etc will have been acquired over a 20 year+ period post graduation.

We all have more to our lives than work and want well rounded communicative people who are enthusiastic about work and play. We have regular office socials and training meetings and encourage all staff to participate in the running of the practice.

We work fairly standard office hours, but are flexible to suit travel etc, but generally finish at about 5pm so that we can enjoy our evenings.

Our offices are in the heart of trendy Wimbledon Village, an energetic (!) 10 minute walk from Wimbledon Station (see map under contact details). Main line station (to Waterloo and Surrey is superb) with District line Tube to the West End and Tram towards Croydon. Free parking is a 10 minute walk away.

If your profile fits the above, we would be pleased to hear from you, initially by Email to mail@pole.co.uk

Must be familiar with all forms of residential construction, ranging from new houses and flats, Victorian houses, extensions and conversions. Some site work and plenty of variety in projects.

Must be a team player and enjoy going to work, but we all enjoy a balanced lifestyle so do not expect you to work long hours. A typical week is 35 to 37 hours and senior positions enjoy 5 weeks holiday.
