Trees and Tree Roots

Trees are the biggest threat to most houses in London where London clay soil is present.

Whilst they add considerable amenity to urban areas, trees should ideally be kept a reasonable distance away from buildings and their height kept under control.

There are specific guidelines for different tree species depending on the classification of the clay soil; essentially a measure of how ‘shrinkable’  the clay soil is.

Our experience over 30 years would suggest that approximately 70% of serious subsidence claims in London, which we survey, result from trees and large shrubs and vines. Wisteria for example can be a significant threat.

The featured tree alongside Engineer Raoul Empey is needless to say not native in South West London but in South America !
